Overview of the class

Over 12 classes, we will unlock your sense of humor by exploring different comedic artforms: improvisation, sketch comedy, standup comedy, and solo characters. Each week we’ll do a deep dive into one or more of these fields, as you learn how to initiate scenes, craft premises, and unlock your humor to write and perform jokes. We’ll put it all together in a show at the end of class, where you can put all of these new instincts into practice.

Questions & Answers

QUESTION: Is this class only for English-speakers / taught in English?ANSWER: Unfortunately, yes. I am a new Oleh and am learning Hebrew from scratch.
——————
QUESTION: Is my English good enough to participate for this class?
ANSWER: While this is up to every individual person, my gut says to ask yourself: Do you like to watch English-language comedies (movies, standup, Saturday Night Live, etc.)? Are you able to laugh and enjoy them? If so, your English is probably good enough to join!
——————
QUESTION: What does it mean that we’re going to learn “various forms”? How do you learn multiple things at the same time?
ANSWER: The skills of humor are largely consistent and able to be applied regardless of what “form” it is. For example, many improv comedians end up writing and acting in sketch comedy; many sketch comedians turn to stand-up comedy. Instead of doing a deep-dive on any one particular form, my goal with this class is to help you learn how to be funnier — and giving you a taste of different things so you can find what you like more.
——————
QUESTION: What is a “sketch show”? Do I have to participate?
ANSWER: A sketch show is something similar to the style of Saturday Night Live — you have a few sketches that are written and performed in front of an audience. This is meant to be the cap on all the skills we’ve learned throughout the course.
Do you have to participate? Of course not, but there are many different ways to participate depending on how comfortable you feel, and I’ll be working with you to see if this is something you want to participate in or not.
